Account Ability: For the Love of Numbers – How two sisters turned their passion for bookkeeping into a successful businessWe’ve all been there. With so many career choices, we’re left wondering if we’ve found the perfect job. Like many others, Lois Baker and her sister Darleen Service contemplated the very same thing; but instead of just dreaming about finding the right career, they acted!
Today, the local entrepreneurs run their own successful bookkeeping firm, Account Ability, which serves many small to mid-sized businesses in the area. Their goal: to provide excellent and personalized service to fit any business owner’s needs.
Lois Baker has always maintained a wide range of interests. The arts aficianado served on the board of Directors for Theatre Windsor for 8 years (and directed her first play, Norm Foster’s “The Affections of May” in March of 2009), has worked as an instructor at a local private college, and before opening Account Ability, owned a tanning and aesthetics salon. Lois has loved working with numbers since grade school. “Doing the books” was her favourite part of running the salon, and it was this experience that led her to take an exclusive bookkeeping position at a local Tool & Mold company. Although she enjoyed the position, the itch of running her own business again was too great to ignore. When the company closed, Lois saw an opportunity to further develop her skills and enrolled in the Self Employment Assistance (SEA) Program. She attended St. Clair College for formal training in Accounting and accounting software and is a Certified Professional Bookkeeper.
In march of 1999, Lois opened Account Ability. Success was in sight as she immediately began servicing numerous clients. Her sister Darleen, a math whiz and former office administrator for a Tool & Mold company, soon joined the Account Ability team as a partner, to help with the work load. From there, the business continued to prosper. Together Lois and Darleen have over 50 years of experience in the industry.
Having known the challenges of running a business, the professionals at Account Ability provide personalized bookkeeping services to make the most of your business operations.
“Just because I can buy a hammer and a saw at the hardware store, it doesn’t make me a carpenter. Just because people can by bookkeeping software at office supply stores, it doesn’t make them a bookkeeper. If you don’t know the theory involved, you can make a big mess!”
